St Luke's, York
A bit more...
St Luke's is a registered Inclusive Church, meaning that we welcome and involve everyone regardless of gender, sexuality, race and disability. St Luke's is known for its worship, which is liturgical without being stuffy, valuing tradition but being equally comfortable with modern worship songs. Our main service each week is a Eucharist, with incense, organ, guitars and prayer ministry. It's very difficult to describe but we promise you it does work, most of the time! In the last year our choirs have sung music ranging from Tallis to Townend, and have lead worship for diocesan services in York Minster. We are involved regularly with York Mystery Plays. Members of the congregation work for the diocese and in the theology department at York St John University and, as such, are well-placed to advise on both lay and ordained vocations. St Luke's runs weekly, well attended after-school children's and youth groups, for which the help of young adults and students is particularly valued. We were York's first Eco-Congregation.
What do we do for students?
The congregation welcomes and values those students who come to worship at St Luke's during their time in York. Over the last few years we have had a small but steady number of students who have worshipped with us, 2 of whom have gone on to ordination training (but no pressure!) So, if you're a student who wants to escape campus at the weekend and enjoy some normal family life, we'd love to see you.
We have a monthly service called Outside In which is specifically aimed towards LGBTQ+ people in our congregation which is very popular with students and young people. Allies are very welcome too!
We would encourage any member of the congregation to develop and use the gifts God has given them, as time in their life allows. If you do have time, there are particular opportunities to be involved in youth and children's work, pastoral work, music and drama.
