York Corps The Salvation Army

York Salvation Army welcomes you to worship and witness with us. Come and share food, fun and fellowship and get involved in our mission.

A bit more...

York Salvation Army worships in Burton Green Primary School just outside the centre of York (see details of bus routes below). Our homelessness team operates in the centre of York. During pandemic restrictions, we have not been able to meet on Sundays as usual. Notification will be given when this changes. In the meantime, worship resources are shared each week and our pastoral contacting groups have been keeping everyone connected whilst we are unable to meet.

We express our Salvationism through our warm fellowship, informal and interactive worship and music, and our passion for sharing Christ's love with the disadvantaged and those in need in our community.

We are working with Burton Green School to build bridges into one of the most disadvantaged communities in York, through our Kid's club, Messy Church, youth work, Starfish mentoring and support work with families. As well as Sunday worship we have house groups and Bible study groups meeting around the city and a programme of children's and youth discipleship activities. We mentor children in three different schools in York and welcome volunteer mentors who can give an hour a week during term time to help those children at risk of exclusion. At Christmas we provide Christmas Day hospitality and over 600 toy parcels and food relief for families referred to us. Our homelessness team run a daily drop in advice service for those facing homelessness.

Our young adults group is made up of students from both York and York St John Universities and other members of the corps. They meet for fellowship, outings, badminton and regular get-togethers and take leadership roles in our outreach. Whilst in York, students have shared in the wider Yorkshire Divisional groups - band, youth chorus and Summer school. We have local hosts who open their homes for Sunday lunchtime after worship for students to share a meal and form a wider circle of friends who can support them and pray for them.

Burton Green School is on the No. 6 bus route which runs from Heslington (University of York), through the city centre (York St John University) and out to Clifton Moor. The bus runs every half hour on Sundays and stops right outside the school. On Sunday mornings freshly brewed coffee is available from 9.15 am until the service starts to welcome you when you arrive!

Please be assured of a warm welcome and full support for you as you settle into your new home in York. If you need specific help in your early days either with practical questions or pastoral support, we are here for you.

What do we do for students?

York Corps welcomes students who have come to study in the city. We have a student co-ordinator and a rota of hosts offering Sunday lunch after worship during term time. As well as involvement in regular activities such as the band, participating in worship, community service and fundraising, students are welcome to attend our Young Adults’ Fellowship on Sunday afternoons each month.

We will also link students with the wider Salvation Army scene in Yorkshire with opportunities to be involved in the Divisional Youth Band, Youth Chorus and Yorkshire School for Creative Arts.

Students are included on our prayer rota and buddy pastoral network and are supported personally by the corps during this time of transition and adjustment. Students who have been linked with us during their time in York have contributed in many different ways that have used their gifting to build up the church. They have also found a spiritual home from home and formed relationships that have continued after they graduate and move away.

Whilst this is our normal schedule, there has been inevitable disruption due to the Covid19 Pandemic. At present we are unable to meet in the groups mentioned above but hope that this will change over the course of the coming year. For up to date information contact us through your fusion page.
