Canterbury Salvation Army

A Christian church in the heart of the city of Canterbury, serving its community and loving God.

A bit more...

Tucked away in Whitehorse Lane – just off the High Street in Canterbury – lies The Salvation Army. We are a Christian church passionate about our local community, ready to welcome anyone. We have a range of activities for all ages and interests.

The Salvation Army is an organisation known by the public for its brass banding and its wide-ranging charity work – it is not as well known as a church, but it is our Christian beliefs that inspire and motivate everything else that we do.

The Army has been based in Whitehorse Lane in Canterbury since 1886. For over 120 years, generations of our church have worshipped together, prayed, shared their beliefs with others and played an important role in the community that we are based in.

Nowadays, we have members from all ages and backgrounds. We have a large number of students from all parts of the UK; people from various professions; retired people; families; children.

What do we do for students?

On a Sunday we make sure our students are catered for (literally). Every Sunday, during term time, lunches are provided by members of the church on a rota basis. Once a month we share together at the Hall after the morning service by each bringing some food to share.

After our Sunday evening services we also meet for Youth Cell (16+), once a fortnight, and Youth Fellowship. This usually happens between around 7pm and 9:30pm either at our Hall or at the home of one of our group.

On Thursdays we hold a weekly Student Meal. For a small price you can enjoy a hearty home cooked meal and a good natter with the rest of the group.

Our "Sections" (the brass band and choir) take part in the worship every Sunday. Practices are held during the week (Tuesdays for the brass band and Wednesday for the choir, both starting at 8pm) and they are open for anyone to come along to and join in with or just listen. If you wish to participate in the services through the band or choir then all we ask is that you attend practices regularly (at least once a month) and arrive on a Sunday wearing black and white.

You are also welcome to join in with any of our other church activities such as Messy Church, La Baguette (our French conversational group) and our drop-in centre, The Annexe.
